DraftKings (NASDAQ: DKNG) - Deep Dive Research - Part 1

TL:DR
Hello, welcome to my first deep dive write up.
My name’s Mark and I’m an accountant with a passion for investing. About two years ago, I used to work as an auditor at a public accounting firm and have been behind the scenes at many different publicly traded and privately held companies in the U.S. My goal is to bring my unique perspective from that past experience, my current experience working in a new role at a large corporation, and my understanding of accounting to help break down some of the most exciting growth stocks on the market today.
I’m a long-term investor. I am focused on finding great companies and holding them for a long time. I’m willing to endure volatility, crazy price drops, and everything that comes with this approach as long as the facts that led me to originally invest and believe in that company have not changed. If you want to learn more about this approach. I recommend reading the book “100 Baggers” by Chris Mayer.
Introduction
I think it’s fitting that my first stock pick has to do with sports. Sports has been a part of my life since I could walk at the age of 2. First with baseball and soccer, and then later in my childhood with golf. I’ve always played American football and basketball for fun as well and have always been an avid fan of all the major sports in the US.
I started playing fantasy sports (mostly just fantasy football) about 6 years ago and have always enjoyed it. Traditionally, with fantasy football you draft a team at the beginning of the year and those are your players for the rest of the season. If you have a bad draft, oh well. You can try to improve your team with trades and free agent additions but it is tough. Leagues usually consist of 10-14 teams (each managed by an individual) and there’s obviously only one winner at the end of the season (about 4 months after the draft). This can lead to the managers of the lower performing teams losing interest as the season wanes on. I believe DraftKings’ (DK) founders saw this issue and saw an opportunity. Enter, daily fantasy sports. Now, with the DK platform you can draft a new team every week. Or if you want, every day. This allows fans of fantasy sports to engage at whichever point of the season they want and at varying financial stakes.
The Thesis Statement
For every stock pick I make, I want to provide a quick thesis statement that can serve as a reminder for why I’m buying and holding that stock for the long term. I’ll always aim to make it just a few sentences long so it can easily be remembered and internalized. This helps during times when the price may sporadically drop and you need to remember why you’re holding this position.
The thesis statement I have come up with for DK is as follows:
“DraftKings: The leader in allowing fans to engage financially with their favorite sports, teams, and players. Having money at stake makes the game a lot more interesting to watch. The era of daily fantasy sports games, online sports betting, and online betting (outside of sports), is just getting started and DK is as well positioned (or better positioned) than anyone to capitalize off of this trend.”
Notice how I said “allowing fans to engage financially” as the first sentence and not necessarily “allowing fans to gamble”. There’s a reason for that. According to US Federal Law, Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) contests have specifically been exempted from the prohibitions of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). DK has always been, and I believe will continue to be DFS contests 1st, sports betting 2nd, and other forms of gambling/entertainment 3rd. It is noteworthy that states at an individual level can still deem DFS contests illegal if they so wish, but as of this writing (11/26/20), 43 of the 50 US States allow DFS contests and DK, accordingly, is offering DFS contests in all 43 of those US States.
I’ll try to clarify the difference between DFS contests and sports betting real quick:
DFS Contest – Pay a pre-set entry fee to enter a contest. All entry fees go towards “The Pot”. “Draft” 9 players to be on your “Team” for 1 week. Enter your “Roster” into a contest with other players (could range from 1 other person to 1,000s of people, the DK user can choose). Whichever “Roster” amasses the most points for that week out of all contestants wins. The winner will get the highest payout, and depending on the nature of the contest, other top finishers will receive smaller payouts as well.
Sports Gambling – Team A is considered a 10 point favorite to defeat Team B. This means that Team A is expected, by the professional gambling line setters, to outscore Team B by 10 points. This is known as a point spread. You can bet on the underdog or the favorite. If you bet on the favorite, they have to win by more than 10 points for you to win the bet. If you bet on the underdog, you will win the bet as long as the underdog keeps the game within less than a 10 point defeat.
These are just a couple simple examples to help you see the difference. Sports Gambling (the 2nd priority of DK) is a very lucrative market just as the DFS contests are. However, in the US, Federal Laws and regulations are a lot stricter on Sports Gambling than they are on DFS. As of this writing (11/27/20), 22 states (including the District of Columbia) out of 51 possible allow sports gambling.
DK is still in the infancy stages of getting their sports gambling business going. In the 22 states where they could potentially operate, they currently have a sports gambling offering in 11 of those states. The sports gambling business model for DK can be broken into two main offerings – mobile sports betting, and retail sports betting. Mobile sports betting means you can place a sports bet online from the comfort of your own home, while retail sports betting means you must go to a casino and place a bet with the sportsbook in person. I personally believe mobile sports betting is the real potential cash cow for DK out of the two types of sports betting offerings due to the convenience and ease of access. DK is currently working on and encouraging customers to lobby their state lawmakers to legalize sports gambling in more states.
How DK makes money
At the very least, before you invest in a company, you better understand how they make money. In Chris Mayers’ excellent book, 100 Baggers, that I mentioned above, he continually references top line revenue growth as one of the main common indicators of a possible 100 Bagger. This isn’t to tell you that any stock I pick will be a 100 Bagger just because it has great top line revenue growth, but if I am looking at a growth stock to hold for the long term, revenue growth is one of the first things I look at.
For DK, their means of making money is quite simple. I already went into detail above about DFS Contests and Sports Gambling. In DK’s latest 10-Q filing with the SEC (filed 11/13/20), revenue is broken out into two main streams: Online Gaming and Gaming Software.
Online Gaming (82% of Total Revenue for 9 months ended 9/30/20):
Online gaming is the true core business of DK and includes the aforementioned DFS Contests, Sports Gambling and additional gambling (non-sports) opportunities. DK refers to their additional gambling (non-sports) as “iGaming” or “online casino”.
For the 9 months ended 9/30/20, Online Gaming revenue totaled $239M, up 30% YoY from $184M in the same prior year period. Keep in mind, that this is an increase that happened during a COVID-19 global pandemic that delayed and shortened many professional sports seasons.
Online gaming revenue is earned in a few ways that are slightly different, but very similar overall. In order to enter a DFS contest, a customer must pay an entry fee. DFS revenue is generated from these entry fees collected, net of prize payouts and customer incentives awarded to users. In order to place a sports bet (sports gambling), a customer places a wager with a DK Sportsbook. The DK Sportsbook sets odds for each wager that builds in a theoretical margin allowing DK to profit. Sports gambling revenue is generated from wagers collected from customers, net of payouts and incentives awarded to winning customers. The last form of online gaming revenue is earned in similar fashion to a land-based casino, offering online versions of casino games such as blackjack, roulette, and slot machines.
Gaming Software (18% of Total Revenue for 9 months ended 9/30/20):
While the Online Gaming revenue stream mentioned above is a Business to Consumer (B2C) model, the Gaming Software revenue stream is a Business to Business (B2B) model. The Gaming Software side of the business was born out of the acquisition of SBTech, a company from the Isle of Man (near the UK) founded in 2007 that has 12+ years of experience providing online sports betting platforms to clients all over the world. The acquisition occurred as part of the SPAC driven IPO in April of 2020 that combined “the old DK company” with SBTech so that they now are “the new DK company” listed as DKNG on the NASDAQ. SBTech is a far more important part of the story than just being 18% of today’s revenue. The reason for this is because DK will eventually (planned mid-late 2021) be migrating all of their DFS and gambling offerings onto SBTech’s online platforms. Currently, for DFS, DK uses their own proprietary platform but that will move to SBTech with the migration. Currently, for online gambling, DK uses Kambi, the same online gambling platform that services Penn Gaming (PENN), a DK rival. But that’s enough about the software migration for now, back to the Gaming Software revenue.
The Gaming Software revenue stream for DK is essentially a continuation of SBTechs’ B2B business model. DK contracts with business customers to provide sports and casino betting software solutions. DK typically enters two different type of arrangements with B2B customers when selling the gaming software:
  1. Direct Customer Contract Revenue: In this type of transaction, the software is sold directly to a business (casino for example) that wants to use the software for their own gambling operations. This revenue is generally calculated as a percentage of the wagering revenue generated by the business customer using DK’s software and is recognized in the periods in which those wagering and related activities conclude.
  2. Reseller Arrangement Revenue: In this type of transaction, DK provides distributors with the right to resell DK’s software-as-a-service offering to their clients, using their own infrastructure. In reseller arrangements, revenue is generally calculated via a fixed monthly fee and an additional monthly fee which varies based on the number of gaming operators to whom each reseller sub-licenses DK’s software.
As mentioned above, SBTech was an international company based in the Isle of Man before being acquired by DK. Thus, the majority of their business in their first 12 years of operating independently has always been international and outside of the United States. This has helped DK, which has historically been US focused, expand it’s international reach.
A perfect example of expanding this international reach occurred recently during October (technically Q4) in which DK’s B2B technology (powered by SBTech) helped enable the launch of “PalaceBet”, a new mobile and online sportsbook offering from Peermont, a South Africa based resort and casino company. The deal was headed by DK’s new Chief International Officer, Shay Berka, who previously spent 10 years working for SBTech as CFO and General Manager. Mr. Berka took on the role of DK’s Chief International Officer upon the merger in April earlier this year. I think this deal shows that DK has integrated SBTech and it’s business very well into the larger business as a whole. They are not wasting any time using their newly acquired resources to expand their reach and bring in new sources of revenue.
This is the end of my first article about DK. My goal is to drop Part 2 later this week. The focus of Part 2 will be an in depth answer of the question – “Can we 10x from here?”
Disclosure: I am/we are long DKNG. I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it. I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article.

Oh Snap! A recap of 90 Days The Other Way

It’s Laura’s wedding day, so she steals a shirt from Tiffany for shoulder-exposed courage and decides to have a talk with Liam about his bath misadventure with Aladdin. She brings him his tux and says it’s not Liam’s place to decide whether or not they have children.
“Just because I’m older, doesn’t mean that I’m not capable.” Um, no Laura, that’s exactly what that means. Did you watch last night’s Before the 90 Days? You’re gonna need someone to tote it.
Liam reminds Laura that she previously said that she was going to support him through college, and then once he got out they were going to support each other. Then he saw Colt and Debbie on 90DF, and saw the dark side of such codependent arrangements.
“I don’t want to eat beef stew from a baby bowl in Las Vegas while you defend your slot machine’s honor. I don’t want to call my wife ‘mother’ by accident. So I’m going to apologize for being toxic to you and Aladdin, and for being preoccupied with the flaws of your union. Can we never go on dates?” All 90 DF wisdom comes from children.
“Just give the guy a chance. He doesn’t want to be your stepfather. He wants to be a friend,” Laura says. That sound is Akinyi running from Kenya.
Now Laura can get ready, and since her preferred corduroy overalls and gingham shirt are in the warsh, she has no choice but to marry in a richly adorned wedding dress. Daniel complains less about life in South Africa than Laura does about being waterboarded into fine clothing. Laura emphasizes the style of this dress by repeating “bling-bling,” which is the latest phrase-phrase to join Laura Two-Time’s vocabulary-vocabulary.
Liam is still wearing the hat that looks like it sprung a leak on one side for the wedding, but he’s added a camel tooth necklace, completing the look of Crocodile DunDon’t. Aladdin looks like the sex in his tux, and his massive family and clan of friends are all smiles, save for a woman in the crowd that covers her eyes to block the burn of rhinestones when the couple trades ring-rings. Liam apologizes to Aladdin for his bad attitude, and the whole fam dances and passes Liam’s magic hat.
“Let’s jiggy-jiggy.” Cringey-cringey.
“GOOD jiggy-jiggy.” Stop it-stop it.
Over in Brazil, Paul is making his son cry, because babies sense danger, and the wee sprout can’t fathom why his perfectly spelled name is pronounced Pee-Yare-Eee by his father figure. Paul’s mom has been controlling Paul with her hair, so the whole visit has brought rare moments of peace. When Paul goes to the store, Karine uses her translator app to ask Mother Paul to smuggle her out of the room and into the car waiting downstairs. When that doesn’t work out, she asks her to talk to Paul about being an adult, or she’s going to need help wrapping his body in a tarp. Mother Paul has known Paul his entire life, so she anticipated this request.
Mother and son go for a walk, and it’s hot enough that Mother Paul looks like she’s just had a prison shower. She tells Paul that she has to retire, and he can’t keep depending on her financially, which apparently he does, a lot. This explains how he finagled airfare on a shit-shoveler’s salary. She tells him that he’s going to need what we common folk call a “job” which is like money without the parent.
“Things aren’t as easy as people think,” contemplates Paul.
“Did you think it would be easy?” Mother Paul asks. Paul’s baffled expression says yes, except for the dangerous toxins oozing from the amazon into his penis, and the wayward baby-hunting bullets.
“Don’t be such a pussy,” says Jeniffer, sending advice from Columbia.
Unfortunately, Paul’s mom can’t stay there forever and won’t take Paul with her, so it’s time to load her into her escape pod before Paul can ask for a loan.
“Your hair smells good,” is Paul’s parting salutation, in honor of his mother’s magic. You did that on purpose Paul, and I appreciate it. You’re going to be on tv longer than the Kardashians.
Paul needs to accelerate anxiety in the aftermath of his mom’s departure to make up for lost time, so he waddles up the stairs to ask Karine if she still wants a divorce. After marinating on options, he decides to go with straight poetry.
“You want divorce?”
“No.”
“You want me beat dead horse?”
“No.”
“Are you sure? It still kicking. Are you sure? Divorce? Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“No? Yes? No? Yes? Me go? You go? You stay me go? Me stay you go? Go stay go? Take a dna test? STD test? SAT test? Are you cheating on me? Do my balls itch? Is it the Amazon River dick worms? Pee-Yar-Eee DNA test?”
(Translator app): “Shut up, Paul.”
Paul then busies himself terrorizing his child with a fuzzy rabbit while he cries, before Karine comes back and rescues him from nightmares of carrots and giant teeth. Karine tells the producers that she hangs on because she hopes he’ll change. Do you have a tranquilizer gun, Karine? I hear those are privately called The Change-maker.
Here’s Suckit, coming soon to an Intro to Psychology class near you. Fellow raisedbynarcissists, step into my protective circle, where a psychic shield will save you from his empty soulful expressions and expressions of remorse for the things he’s going to keep doing anyway.
Suckit has spent seven days away from Jenny, which is an eternity in douchebag time, before receiving special permission from his family to visit her. Jenny has spent five months in India, and we have no idea what she’s done in that time, other than blindside us with flesh-colored pants.
The doorbell rings, and like many women who “totally didn’t know” she greets her married boyfriend with open arms.
“I don’t want to lose you,” declares currently-married Suckit. “I got married, and after that, I tried.” Let’s review the timeline real quick:
Year of All Bullshit: Jenny meets Suckit online, through a fake profile he’s created, using some other dude’s photo.
As the Deception Turns: Suckit marries. He reveals portions of his true identity to Jenny, but tells her nothing about his marriage. This first year is apparently when “he tried” and his wife was happy.
Four score and seven lies ago: Suckit convinces Jenny to abandon her life in the states and move to India to be with him, promising that he’ll marry her so she can remain there permanently.
Year of the Dog: Jenny arrives, and Suckit insists that his family is trying to keep them apart. He tells her they’ll do a ring ceremony, which is like an engagement, and promises Jenny’s daughter he won’t hurt her.
It was the worst of times, it was the worst of times: Suckit’s father-in-law snatches him back, and tells Jenny that he’s married. Would he have ever told Jenny the truth? Probably not.
Present douche: Suckit insists that he’s been victimized by marriage. “I say it’s not working out, but nobody listens.” Jenny has no idea what he actually says to his wife and family at home.
To demonstrate that her priorities are not exactly perfectly aligned either, Jenny lists every item in her apartment like Steve Martin’s slow exit in The Jerk, and asserts that she has “nothing” back home, except for this lamp. In reality, she has 1.) A daughter and daughter-in-law, and 2.) A place to sleep. This is a whole lot of something to me.
Then she asks Sumit what he wants, as one does once the lie-discovery stage of the investigation is complete. She’s ready for Congress. He says he doesn’t want Jenny to leave, and is ready to fight for their relationship. By this he means that he expects several more months to pass where he’ll ask for just a little more time, while remaining involved with both of them.
“Was this fair to me?” Jenny asks. No Jenny, it wasn’t. But you’re not really a person to Suckit, just a supporting character in his story. “Should we just end it?” WTF Jenny. You are exactly who he was looking for.
Suckit says his wife has to agree to a divorce. You see, now it’s his wife fault that he had an affair their entire marriage, and for however long they were dating before that (if they were), and the burden of their future rests with her. Does he have kids? Who is this poor woman, and why does she have to suffer this?
Jenny admits they’ll probably never see each other again, and once she returns she’ll have to start over. This is the most grounded thing I’ve heard Jenny say, but I suspect they’ll continue carrying on with Facebook emojis and wild adolescent declarations of love indefinitely.
Their story is so sour this episode would have left me flatlined if it wasn’t for Daniel. Tiffany is surprised to learn that a life of loneliness and squalor is threatening to Hoover the Disney princess out of Daniel, who remains too sweet for this world. Much like a creature living in the ocean with talking fish companions, Daniel finds cause for celebration in their sad South African manor: “I finally get to leave this gate! Wheeee!” Then little birds and butterflies dance through his hair, and a talking teapot clacks a farewell with its lid.
The kickstand in Tiffany’s brain is slowly lifting, with: “My common sense is telling me, ‘Don’t live here.’” What’s common sense doing here? Did it get lost on the way to see Jenny?
Tiffany and Ronald take Daniel to a post-apocalypse playground for a little used-syringe tag and broken glass tetherball. When I was a kid we used to play “try and push the boulder” at an abandoned construction site, so I’m thinking a little imagination will really put some lipstick on this hellscape. Tiffany asks Daniel what he thinks about South Africa, and he says that he doesn’t like the parks, or the fences, or the danger. He says it’s safer in America. Daniel has never visited the exotic American lands of Cleveland, Chicago, and Flint, or the white knuckle 7-11 these-colors-don’t-run it’s-the-aliens hayride of Parkersburg, West Virginia.
Daniel says it’s really tough to choose between having a dad and living on the set of The Road. Tiffany says that she doesn’t want him to have the stress of making that decision. Then I blacked out. Where did Mother Tiffany come from? Since when do parents act like parents on this show? How did the editors let this sneak by?
Ronald takes Tiffany to the edge of a cliff for a romantic view of crime. She says that she has something important to talk to him about.
“Oh snap,” says Ronald, making it easier for her.
She tells him that after three months in South Africa, it doesn’t feel like the right place for her and Daniel. “I’m putting a lot of financial pressure on you, and I’m afraid of you having a relapse.” This is “it’s not me, it’s you; I’m just so merciful” escape act for partners of addicts.
She says America is safe, which is true if you’re not a black dude or a woman and manage to avoid a shooting at an elementary school, movie theater, garlic festival, night club, or country concert. Tiffany says she wants to go back home and try to bring Ronald to the US instead. His criminal record might seem like a point of exclusion, but mi prison colony is su prison colony. Ronald reports that he is sad, while Tiffany looks like she’s going to run skipping down the cliff side, throwing flowers in the air, with daydreams of epidurals dancing through her head.
Next week: Deavan also finds cause to complain about costumes, Tiffany makes several more references to Ronald’s addiction, Cory plans an elaborate proposal for the woman who doesn’t want to get married, and Jenny packs a suitcase and cries.
Thank you thank you Patreon supporters!

Teaching Abroad

Teaching Abroad
Since some of you have been sending me private messages about teaching abroad, I thought I'd write a post about this.
My background: I'm a military service "brat" and was largely raised overseas in Ghana, Thailand, and El Salvador. As a child I attended international American schools and later as an adult, I spent nearly half of my 17 year long elementary teaching career working abroad at American schools in Saudi Arabia and Lebanon.
Since I was unable to readjust to teaching in the U.S. public schools after returning stateside in '99, I opted out of elementary ed and pursued a degree in Culinary Arts. After graduating with honors, I spent a few years working in the food service industry before returning to public education in 2007, this time as the chef instructor of a high school Culinary Arts program.
International Schools:
There are basically four types of international schools:
  • Department of Defense schools for the dependents of military personnel.
  • Proprietary Schools - Most international schools charge tuition. These schools serve the educational needs of Americans living abroad. Some schools serve the children of U.S. military personnel if there aren't enough dependents to warrant having a DoD school. They also serve the children of U.S. State Department personnel, business people, missionaries, and other U.S. civilians who are living abroad with children. In addition to serving Americans, many of these schools also serve the children of other nationalities including those of the host country.
  • Corporate schools exist to serve the educational needs of corporate dependents. These schools are often in isolated areas such as the Saudi desert (Aramco Schools)
  • Missionary Schools - Some schools were established for the children of missionaries. Other serve the local population.
There are literally hundreds of international schools all over the world. While I myself taught in the Middle East, I've had friends who have worked in Bali, Indonesia. They lived in bungalows just off the beach! I've also known teachers who have worked throughout Asia, Central and South America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Africa.
NOTE: The Department of Defense schools do not attend international job fairs. To work at one of these schools, you'd have to apply directly to the DoD. I don't know if things have improved but I applied to work for DoD back in 1990. By '91 I was working in Saudi Arabia and 6 months into my employment with Saudi Aramco, I got a DoD letter asking me if I would like to be interviewed for a job.
One other thing you should know about these schools is that since you would be a Federal employee, your income would be taxable by the IRS.
Basic Requirements:
Most international schools require teachers to have the following credentials:
  • A minimum of two years of prior teaching experience
  • A bachelor's degree
  • Current teacher's certification
  • 3 letters of reference
  • Official transcripts and a copy of your certification to document your eligibility for employment
  • A current passport
Prior teaching experience is often required because nearly everyone in the teaching profession understands how challenging it can be to be a first year teacher. When you throw in being overseas and add the potential factor of culture shock and homesickness, most overseas schools require teachers to have prior teaching experience. As challenging as it may be for some schools in the states to replace teachers who leave mid-year, you can probably imagine how challenging it is for international schools to replace teachers who leave prior the end of the school year.
While teaching certification is often a requirement, this requirement depends in part upon the host country laws regarding private education. Some countries require certification. Others don't. In Lebanon I knew a journalism teacher who was a free lance reporter and photographer. While she didn't have a teaching certificate, she had a lot of real world experience.
What it's like to work abroad:
There's a common saying among expat teachers that goes like this. Anyone who works abroad may generally have two of these three things:
  • Money
  • Travel
  • Decent housing
Housing: Most schools either provide furnished housing or will subsidize their teachers for the cost of an apartment or home. In Saudi Arabia, I worked for the Saudi Aramco Oil Company schools and had assigned corporate housing. In Beirut, Lebanon, I lived in what had once been a student dorm. This was just after the end of the 17 year long Lebanese Civil War. My faculty apartment WAS NOT air-conditioned at the time (though it is now) and Beirut is hot and humid throughout most of the year. I have also known teachers who lived in furnished apartments as well as a few who stayed in hotels.
Air Fare: Most schools will provide a round trip plane ticket from wherever you are in the states to the host country and back. Some will only provide a return ticket after you've completed your one or two year contract. Others offer an annual return ticket so that you may have the opportunity to return home (or travel elsewhere) over the summer.
Although Aramco provided a shipping allowance that allowed me to bring my personal belongings abroad at no cost to me, most schools won't do this. A lot of expats either pay for personal items to be freighted (which can take 3 months if being shipped) or they live out of their suitcases and buy whatever else they need locally.
Salaries: You have to be very careful about salaries. Aramco paid U.S. dollars with direct deposits to my bank in the states. Many other employers will only pay you in the host country currency which is fine if the economy is stable. It's not so good for Americans living in countries with rampant inflation like Venezuela.
Benefits: Most employers provide medical benefits but you will have to check your contract to see if these benefits will cover you when you're stateside or visiting another country other than the host country where you're employed. Many schools also offer some sort of pension, a 401K, or some other system for retirement. The number of years you have to work for a given school to be vested will vary from one school to the next.
Taxes: After working abroad from a year, you will be exempt from paying the U.S. income tax but will still have to file an annual return. It's a lot easier to do this now with the advent of the internet and online tax filing. This wasn't the case when I worked abroad and all taxes had to be filed through the international mail.
The reason why overseas income is tax exempt on your Federal taxes is because it's presumed that you'll be paying the host country income tax. Depending upon where you're working, the income tax rate might be higher than what we pay in the states ... or it could be lower. Some schools will pay the host country income tax. Others won't. Saudi Arabia had NO income tax and in Beirut my school took care of the local taxes.
Banking: Regardless of where you live, it's generally useful to have a local bank account if for no other reason than to have the ability to cash personal checks and to get traveler's checks for when you traveled outside the host country.
Why Teach Abroad?
  1. Every school I've attended as a student and every school I've worked at as a teacher has had a student body that was on or above grade level. Most of the parents were interested in supporting their child's learning. Unlike U.S. public schools which are required to educate everyone regardless of whether or not they want to learn, overseas schools serve a student population that can be quite different from the ones in the states.
  2. International schools by virtue of being abroad, are exempt from NCLB testing requirements. This doesn't mean that international schools don't administer tests. Many do ... but the test data is used for in-school improvements and/or to provide accountability data for accreditation reviews. Testing doesn't drive teaching as it so often does in the States.
  3. Most countries abroad are much smaller than the U.S. and they aren't as geographically isolated as North America is with oceans on either side. This means that if you have an extended 3 day weekend, you can hop on a train or plane for a short trip across the border to a neighboring country. While living in the Middle East, I once spent Spring Break in Syria. I spent another vacation in Jordan. For Christmas, I once spent a week cruising down the Nile on an old paddle wheel steamer. In Thailand we used to take short trips to Hong Kong. I spent Spring Break in Singapore, Taiwan, and Japan. I've summered everywhere from Asia to Europe.
  4. When you live abroad, you get to know the host country in a way you would never have been able to do as a tourist. If you're socially outgoing, you'll make local friends who will often be more than happy to show off their country from their perspective; immersing you in the host country culture with food, beverages, music, art, and all sorts of sporting and cultural events. In Beirut, one of my favorite activities after work was sitting outside a Lebanese bistro with friends while enjoying coffee or tea, eating freshly baked pita bread with hummus, and watching the sun set over the Mediterranean Sea. Lebanese students from the nearby American University (AUB) often provided a bit of local culture by dancing in a semi-circle while their classmates banged on drums. This was a really nice way to end the day and this sense of cultural immersion is one of the things that I miss about living abroad.
Beirut as seen from the Corniche, the road that parallels the Mediterranean.
May non-Americans Teach Abroad in International American Schools?
The answer is both yes and no. It really depends upon the individual school since no two are exactly alike. When I taught for the Saudi Aramco schools in Saudi Arabia, they had a policy of only hiring U.S. nationals with valid teaching certificates. In Lebanon one only had to speak English and to have a valid teaching certificate. In addition to the Lebanese faculty, at the time I worked there we had teachers from the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Canada, and Venezuela.
If you are from the United Kingdom, you should be aware that there are international British schools. In addition to Search Associates, the Council of International Schools hosts an annual international teaching job fair in London.
How to Get a Job Teaching Abroad:
The easiest way to find a job abroad is to attend a job fair for the international schools. At the time I taught abroad which by now ws nearly 20 years ago, the biggest host for international job fairs was the International Schools Service (ISS). They hold two annual job fairs per year in the United States and one job fair abroad. They also now hold two virtual job fairs.
I am told that they have been replaced as the premier source of overseas teaching positions by Search Associates. Twenty years ago, Search was a tiny organization. I'm both amazed and impressed that they've managed to surpass the ISS in the size of their job fairs. I can't help but wonder if the ISS shot itself in the proverbial foot since they had an unfortunate tendency to always side with the overseas schools instead of the teachers working abroad. Case in point: I knew a teacher who worked in Venezuela who had to leave after runaway inflation and the lack of basic groceries in the local supermarkets made it possible for him to support his family. The ISS blacklisted him for breaking contract.
In addition to Search Associates and the ISS, the University of Northern Iowa has one annual job fair. If you're Canadian, Queens College in Ontario has one annual job fair. In the United Kingdom, the Council of International Schools hosts an annual job fair in London. Search Associates also has a job fair in London.
The recruiting season for the next school year runs from November through February.
Applicants who want to attend a job fair either in person or on-line must first apply to the organization that's hosting the fair. You may fill out an online application. You will also need to submit official copies of your transcripts, a copy of your teaching certificate, and 3 letters of reference.
If you decided to go to a job fair, DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE.
The job fair will send you a list of schools that will be attending the event that you're interested in. Research these schools to see if these are places where you'd like to work. Given our current geopolitical climate, it would behoove you to verify that the country is safe and financially stable so that you don't have to worry about having to be evacuated during a military conflict or having to worry about how you'll survive if there's rampant inflation and the cost or even the availability of groceries far exceeds what you're earning in local currency. You also don't want to worry about terrorist threats or being kidnapped off the streets either for ransom or for political drama.
I would recommend being proactive about the list of schools you receive. Email a cover letter and resume to the point of contact with each school that you're interested in. If nothing else, this could help you save some time.
The way in-person job fairs are held, each applicant is given a blank appointment card with the dates and times available throughout the conference. The job fair is usually held in hotel ballroom with the schools in alphabetical order going clockwise around the perimeter of the room.
Each recruiter will be seated behind a table. On the wall above the table will be the name of the school and a list of the open positions that they're looking to fill.
Getting back to why it makes sense to contact schools ahead of time .. what's the point of standing in line for 30 minutes just to be told, "Thank you for your interest but we already have some applicants that we're interested in."
I've been to two ISS job fairs and I've seen candidates for Aberdeen, Scotland standing in a long line that would take an hour for the recruiter to completely process while other schools such as those for Lima, Peru and Alexandria, Egypt have had no one standing in line. Pictured below is a UNI job fair.

https://preview.redd.it/v90hntpcqn421.jpg?width=620&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d1d8258c1aa65b8f8a4a4ae0e682e52fca7b6706
After meeting with recruiters and setting up appointments to interview, the rest of the conference is spent attending job interviews. If you MISMANAGE the time needed to set up interview appointments, you won't get a 2nd shot. It's absolutely critical that you use this time wisely to find as many recruiters and to set up as many interviews as possible. Even if you're not particularly interested in working at that school, why not give them a shot and hear what they have to say? If nothing else you will have filled an interview slot and since expat administrators tend to move from one job to another just like expat teachers, you never know if the administrator you're interviewing with today might be at another school a few years down the road. A positive rapport with one administrator could lead to a future job. You will never know unless you take a chance.
Even though you are only capable of accepting one job, wouldn't it be nice if you had a range of options?
During my first ISS conference which was held in New Orleans back in 1991, I had offers of employment for:
  • Lima, Peru
  • Bucharest, Romania
  • Alexandria, Egypt
  • Dhahran, Saudi Arabia
  • Taipei, Taiwan
I went with Saudi Arabia because they offered the best pay and no host country income tax. Housing was corporate issued but the rent of $130 a month with PAID UTILITIES was ridiculously low. Although Aramco had a year round school system, teachers got one month off per year for repat (repatriation) and if memory serves, we got an annual $7500 in vacation allowance.
In contrast, teacher pay in Lima was low and at the time, the country wasn't particularly stable.
Bucharest, Romania might have been interesting but the principal was brutally honest. She wanted to hire me because I'm a minority and I didn't want to be a "show and tell" sort of teacher where kids (and possibly parents) would stare at me as the school's ONLY example of cultural diversity.
The principal at Alexandria, Egypt seemed depressed. "Why would you want to work here?" she asked. "There's nothing in Alexandria." (Although I appreciated her honesty, I can't help but wonder if she was being a bit too honest.)
The administrator for Taipei advised me that as a bachelor, I would probably have to share an apartment with another teacher. He also refused to tell me what my salary would have been and kept saying, "Issues of salary aside, if I offered you a job, would you come?"
I kept telling him that salary was not an "issue aside" at least not for me. I wanted to know how much I would be paid. Since the administrator wouldn't tell me and since his Chinese colleague literally turned up her nose to me after learning that my grandfather had been nothing more than an uneducated Chinese peasant, I said no to working in Taipei.
In terms of other opportunities, Seoul Foreign School in Seoul, Korea turned me down flat. SFS was founded as a missionary school and after waiving aside my educational credentials, the principal eagerly rubbed his hands together, leaned forward in his chair and said, "Now let's talk about your relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ."
Since I was agnostic at the time, my lack of Christian faith ended the interview rather quickly.
Helpful Tips for Living Abroad:
As a child I have lived in 3 foreign countries and have taught in 2 others. Here are some life lessons I picked up while living abroad.
  1. Register with the local U.S. Consulate: It's always a good idea to register your presence with the local Consulate because if things go bad in a hurry and if the U.S. government orders an evacuation (as they did after Beirut was bombed by the Israeli Air Force), the U.S. Consulate won't be telling you about the evacuation orders and where you should go if they don't know that you're in the country.
  2. While you don't have to carry your passport while out and about in your host country community, it's always a good idea to have picture ID. While living in Syrian occupied Beirut back in '98, I was once stopped by a group of Syrians at a checkpoint. A member of the moukbarrt, Syrian secret police, (which wasn't so secret since these guys swaggered around in leather coats with berets and AK-47's slung over their shoulders), literally stuck his weapon in my face while loudly screaming for my ID. Since I had an assault weapon pointed at me, I moved very slowly to retrieve my wallet. After looking at my driver's license, the security guy barked, "ARE YOU CIA?" I subsequently pulled out my work permit which showed that I was a teacher at the American Community School of Beirut. The security man lowered his weapon, pocketed some of my Lebanese currency, and tossed my wallet back to me before gesturing for me to be on my way. I DID NOT complain about the money he took. Baksheesh (bribes) were quite common at the time. A Lebanese parent of one of my students owned a bakery and he told me that Syrian military officers often entered his bakery to demand complimentary baklava and other pastries. None of these were ever paid for and nobody with any common sense ever complained.
  3. Be careful about using the international mail. The international mail was fine in Saudi Arabia but mail and packages sent home from Beirut never reached their destinations in the States. The local mail service was so bad that the school had a private service set up. All packages and letters being sent to faculty working in Beirut were sent to an address in the U.S. and once a month these items were air-freighted to Beirut.
  4. Your new colleagues in the host country will be an invaluable source of information regarding the efficiency of the local mail system along with where to shop, eat, bank, and how best to get around your local community. BTW check with your expat colleagues to make sure that the local tap water is safe to drink. In Beirut the pipes for tap water often ran parallel to sewage pipes. The word "disgusting" does not even begin to cover how nasty the sewage was since it sometimes backed up across the tiled flooring of the shower in my 2nd floor apartment.
  5. Please respect the host country's laws and traditions. Being an American does not guarantee that the rights you enjoy in the United States will even be respected while living abroad. I can't even begin to tell you how embarrassing it was to live abroad and to hear some loud American yell, "THAT'S NOT HOW WE DO THINGS IN THE US!" In India I once saw a Texan berate a taxi driver for allowing a cow to block the road. The passenger actually got out of the vehicle to remove his cowboy hat and to smack the cow on the rump with a loud, "HAW!" He was subsequently mobbed by angry Hindus. In Beirut, don't expect the butcher to stock pork if you're living in the western part of the city because this part of Beirut is MUSLIM and Muslims don't eat pork. If you're living in west Beirut and if you have to have some pork, go shopping in Christian dominated east Beirut and be discrete when you return home. Why offend your colleagues or neighbors if you don't have to?
  6. Electrical devices: While the U.S. uses direct current, most other countries use alternating current. The configuration of electrical sockets will often be different. If you're planning on bringing U.S. purchase electrical appliances overseas such as your laptop and your smart phone, do yourself a favor and research the type of current that's used in your host country. Bring along a decent quality power strip and an adapter with connections that will fit the local sockets. Plug the adapter into the wall and connect it to your power strip to safely charge your electrical devices. If you don't do this and you somehow manage to plug your devices in, you will short circuit them.
  7. If you've living abroad and you're planning to move back to the states and have lots of stuff that you want to bring with you, hire a moving company instead of a freight company. A freight company will only deliver to your home address but WILL NOT unload the truck. Movers will. You will BTW have to fill out a U.S. Customs Declaration. Be very careful of what you write down. When returning home from Beirut, I shipped some belongings home including a sheepskin showing a panda that I had picked up in China. I noted "sheepskin with panda image" on my declaration form. U.S. Customs subsequently seized my shipment because all they saw was the word, "panda" AND I was billed for the cost of inspecting my shipment which I thought was thoroughly unfair ... but since they wouldn't release my belongings until I paid, up they had me over the proverbial barrel.
  8. Be sure to file an annual tax return with the IRS and your home state even if your income is tax exempt. If you fail to file a tax return, don't be surprised if you get audited when you return home. If you are audited, not only will you be liable for any unpaid back taxes but you'll also be liable for penalties and interest.
  9. If you own your own home and you decide to rent it out while living abroad, arrange to have your home rented by a professional management company. I once knew a school psychologist who bragged about his ability to judge a person's character. He interviewed someone who wanted to rent his home and surprise-surprise, a month after moving abroad, the tenant stopped paying rent. After arranging for a friend to visit his property, the friend was cursed and threatened. By the time he returned with the police, the house had been vacated and gutted. The heater, stove, washing machine, dryer, and refrigerator was missing. Someone had poured cement down all the drains. A sledge hammer had also been used to destroy windows, doors, and walls. The cost of repair and replacement far exceeded the rent and security deposit that the psychologist had collected prior to moving abroad. To be candid, do you really want to have to deal with a phone call from the states at 3 AM about the water heater that has gone out? Can you imagine having to deal with emergency repairs while living abroad? It would be a nightmare. It's far better to employ a management company. Not only will they screen applicants but most will also keep an escrow of funds available for emergency repairs should the need for repairs ever arise.
  10. Here's a handy travel tip. If you're traveling back to the states, check with a local travel agency about the cost of traveling around the world as opposed to a round trip flight to and from your home. It's often cheaper to travel around the world so long as you're going through major hubs in Europe, Asia, and North America. I did this while living in Saudi Arabia and always enjoyed laying over for a few days in different countries each year either while headed home or back to work.
  11. Keep copies of your driver's license, passport, and work permit "just in case." In Saudi Arabia, the government required my employer to hold on to my passport. Since I was in Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Shield when the U.S. was slowly building up military force along the Kuwait's border, there was the very real possibility that Iraq might jump the proverbial gun (no pun intended) by invading Saudi Arabia. The Aramco Oil Company at the time strongly encouraged all expats to keep and maintain an evacuation carry-on bag for each man, woman, and child.
My bag contained the following items:
  • 1 change of clothing
  • Two changes of underwear and socks.
  • Bottled water and granola bars
  • Copies of all documentation (This won't replace your missing documentation but it will verify that you're a U.S. citizen and it will help U.S. Consulate officials in more quickly replacing your passport. Sadly, you'd have to contact your DMV if you were to lose your driver' s license.)
  • Copies of important addresses (which nowadays is on my smart phone but we didn't have this back in the 90's and to be candid, if you're on a long flight and your phone loses its charge, having a hard copy backup for important information is always a good idea).
  • Blank personal checks
  • Cashier's checks
  • Towel (If you have to ask why I included a towel, read "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy")

Conclusion:

Spring Break in Petra, Jordan
All told, I've spent 17 years abroad. I've summered on hand carved teak house boats in India, have walked the shores of the Dead Sea, and I've had tea on the bonny banks of Loch Lomond in Scotland. I've ridden elephants in Thailand, camels in Saudi Arabia, and donkeys in Jordan. I've had a lifetime of experiences, most good but a few that were scary such as being in Hong Kong during a typhoon, being aboard a sailboat off the coast of El Salvador during a tropical storm, having to duck and cover during Iraqi scud missile attacks in Saudi Arabia and being in Beirut when the Israelis bombed the city.
I gave up living abroad after I got tired of living out of a suitcase and not having anyplace to call my own. I now own two homes, have 5 cats, and am surrounded by possessions that I've collected from all over the world. Although I sometimes think about putting all of my stuff into storage and returning abroad, the fact that I have five cats means that I'm stateside for good. I'm not traveling with 5 cats nor would I be willing to give any of them up.
Edit 12/16/2018: This post was updated following constructive comments from other reddit members. Since my own expat teaching experience lies nearly 20 years in the past, I updated the how to find a job section to include Search Associations and the UNI. I also included Queens University in Canada for our Canadian readers.
This got me to thinking about whether non-Americans may teach in the international American schools, so I addressed this topic as well.
I also briefly addressed the idea of respecting the laws and culture of the host country. For those of us who have lived abroad, I'm sure we've all seen unfortunate examples of the "ugly American" who often expects the local laws and culture to conform with life as we know it back in the States. I then added a section about varying types of electrical currents and how to safely recharge U.S. purchased devices.
I hope that other expats, both current and former, will contribute to this thread. Please feel free to share your experiences with living abroad. If you can think of something I haven't included in this post, please tell me and I'll edit the post as needed.
Shukran! Thank you!

170311 After-report #4: 2017 AOA 1st Concert “Ace of Angels” in Seoul

Last summer I took a day trip to Nagoya to see AOA. Last winter I went hours east to Tokyo, staying overnight to see AOA. Now it’s escalated to international travel—someone must put a stop to this.
Here’s my inevitably too-long after report for their Seoul concert.
TL;DR: In Seoul, AOA held their fourth 1st concert! All the while shamelessly speaking their native language solely in order to taunt my shaky Korean skills.

March 11, 2017: AOA holds their first ever solo concert! Never mind the three other solo concerts they’ve held in Japan, those don’t count. This one’s for real because it’s in Korea!

2017 AOA 1st Concert [Ace of Angels] in Seoul!

First of all, thanks to TeflPabo and flyinbluetardis for meeting up with me in Seoul, demonstrating that Redditors aren’t merely composed of pixels. Who’d have thought that a concert could be some form of social gathering…

Ordering the Ticket

The tickets went on sale January 20 exclusively from Auction.co.kr, a Korean site that just sells the tickets normally, and not as any sort of auction. (Amazon’s not actually in South America either.)
Interestingly, the concert seemed to sell out immediately, then 18 days later a bunch of tickets were suddenly available once again. What was that all about? These reanimated tickets were gradually bought up as the concert date approached.
Because TeflPabo heard about these tickets and posted about it here, I soon found myself with a sudden trip to Seoul on my calendar.
Navigating the English part of the Auction site was fairly straightforward, and I had no problem ordering from Japan with a credit card. (If you define “no problem” as having to use a virtual machine to run whatever random version of Windows I had on hand in order to launch Internet Explorer so I could install some arbitrary Korean browser plugin to make the purchase “secure.”)
There were three ticket options:
I chose a ticket in the left-side ‘다’ standing area. Exotically, for this concert I actually got to choose my location, unlike AOA concerts in Japan where they generally just randomly assign you somewhere.
The ticket cost ₩99,000 plus a ₩1,000 booking fee, for a round ₩100,000 (in the neighborhood of $90 USD).
Interestingly, if you use the overseas (English) order page, they don’t actually send you your ticket. You just get a PDF receipt that you bring with you to the ticket office at the venue, where they hold your ticket until you pick it up once you arrive. To do so you need photo ID of some sort; a passport works. While presumably a well-oiled system, it leaves one in the unnerving situation of booking a hotel and flight to Seoul, entering the country, and navigating to the correct part of the city, all the while having to simply trust that there’ll really be a ticket waiting there.

How to buy a ticket in a standing area: Number, not position!

Here’s where I was stupid. When I bought my standing ticket, there were open slots scattered throughout the ‘다’ section. With previous (sit-down) concerts in mind, I made the unthinking mistake of choosing my ticket by its position (at the edge of the inner divider) because I figured it’d make a good place to see from. But (this is obvious in hindsight) that’s not how standing areas work. Standing means there aren’t any “places” to reserve—the only thing that matters is the order in which you’re released into the standing area, after which you can stand anywhere you like. Low numbers = good. Only immediately after I’d paid did this occur to me.
At the time I could have gotten position #82, but instead deliberately chose #180 (of 460 in the section) because it looked good on the “seating” chart. Oops. So there wound up being 100 extra people ahead of me in line than there otherwise would have been. My bad; now I know! And so do you.

Flying to Seoul!

So, Seoul! And for that matter, Korea! I've been living in Japan since before the Clinton administration and somehow never managed to make it over here before now. Turns out the flight is shorter than the length of the concert.
It was weird randomly encountering Excuse Me on the flight’s music channel on the way in. AOA in the wild? Shit just got real!
I arrive in Seoul just before 10 PM on Friday. The concert is at 6:00 PM on Saturday, and my flight back is at 5:00 PM on Sunday.
My entire trip itinerary is essentially: Incheon Airport -> Hotel in Seoul -> Bookstore -> Concert -> Dinner -> Hotel again -> Seoul Station -> Airport. Basically running on adrenaline; I’ll figure out what I’m doing (did) later.

Concert Day! Saturday 2017-03-11: The Broad Schedule

12:00 PM—Goods go on sale 2:00 PM—I arrive at the venue 3:00 PM—Ticket booth opens 4:30 PM—Start lining up for standing areas 5:10 PM—Standing area lines begin moving 6:00-8:20 PM—The concert 8:21 PM—Find somewhere to sit down, since I've been on my feet since 4:30 PM.

12:00 PM—Buying My Goods (by remote control!)

While I’m optimizing my brief time in Korea by shopping for random Korean books to study back home (Korean Age of Ultron storybook? Sure, why not?), my fellow Redditors are standing in line—for a LONG time—to buy some official concert goods for me (along with their own). Thanks to both of you; this really helped me out on my already insane schedule!

2:00 PM—Arrive at the Venue: Olympic Hall

The concert is held at the Olympic Hall, in Olympic Park, in eastern Seoul.
Olympic Hall seats 2,452 people, so in capacity it just beats out the Nagoya venue AOA performed at last summer. There’s also a history-of-K-pop exhibition, that I have absolutely no free time to even glance at.
Today the park is populated with families out enjoying the good weather, riding around on odd family bikes that look like something out of The Prisoner. It’s sunny and almost warm, in contrast to yesterday. I hear that this beautiful weather is the inevitable result of the impeachment of the Korean president the previous day. Didn’t know it worked that way, but good to know.
I finally arrive at 2 PM, meet my hardworking fellow Redditors in front of the hall, and first of all pay for my concert goods. I’ll list those at the end.
Nobody can enter the hall itself until immediately before the performance, so everything’s happening outside. There’s a ticket booth that’s not open yet, and tents set up for paying for goods, picking up your paid-for goods, giving to the “Love FNC” charity, a fan-club booth, and a place for people with VIP tickets to pick up their “VIP Packages.” VIP package? Now I’m curious…
I wonder if I could have signed up for the Korean Ace of Elvis in person while I was there? Was that a wasted opportunity? Were they even selling memberships? I didn’t see any “Join up!” banner. I have as yet failed to successfully pay for a membership from overseas…

These Rice Things

All around the hall’s entrance area are what I can only describe as “these rice things.” Apparently it’s a known thing, just not known to me: if you donate X kilograms of rice, it seems you get to display a modest-to-gigantic banner celebrating the member(s) of your choice (or AOA as a whole), along with being able to credit yourself or your group. More rice means more real estate and better positioning. There are like three dozen of these, positioned all over the place outside the hall. Many were domestic, but there were also ones from foreign AOA groups: a number from Taiwan and China, but also Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Brunei… I didn’t know AOA had fans in Brunei.
At the top is MinA Mayuge with 550 kg of rice, positioned most prominently as you approach the Hall, followed by AOA China Union with 500 kg, right by the entry doors. There are a number of 100 kg displays, along with quite a few at 20 kg. It’s kind of nifty.
(FWIW “MinA Mayuge” means “MinA Eyebrow(s)” in Japanese. Make of that what you will…)
In total 3.37 tons of rice are donated in AOA’s name.
I probably sound hopelessly ignorant about the whole thing, but that’s only because I am hopelessly ignorant about it.

3:15 PM—Picking up our tickets

The ticket office opens at 3 PM. At 3:15 we have essentially no line to deal with.
Some minor consternation is had in our group due to having used a username for the order—turns out that doesn’t exactly work with photo ID—but after some head scratching, producing the credit card used for the order works out in the end. Whew. That’s a trap that sounds very easy for people to fall into, so I thought it important to include here. Pro tip: order your ticket using your real name!
With tickets in hand, those of us with standing area reservations then go to the tent next door where they punch our tickets and give us the colored tape wrist bands that allow us entry; yellow for my ‘다’ area. (The two VIP areas were white for ‘가’ and black for ‘나.’ Don’t recall what color the ‘라’ wrist band was.)
At this point we’re each handed a sign saying “역속할게 늘 지금처럼” (something along the lines of, “I’ll promise you to be always like now.”) with trilingual (ko-en-ja) instructions to hold these up when AOA perform “With ELVIS.”
We’re also prohibited from revealing the signs to AOA before the event. Of course if I’m supposed to be seeing AOA before the event even starts (so I can avoid showing them the sign) that kind of implies I’ll be hanging out in their dressing room, which I hadn’t really planned on doing today. But fine, I’ll see if the opportunity presents itself.
I did all of this without using any Korean. They know that there are lots of foreign fans attending these things, and things are set up so that English ultimately works. I want to use Korean as much as possible as points of both linguistic pride and simple courtesy, but I’m honestly just not there yet. Hopefully next time.
We then go to the venue café while waiting for the call to line up. In the café TeflPabo’s ‘라’ wrist band immediately attracts a wandering Elvis, so we all have a brief chat.

4:30 PM—Lining Up

At 4:30 PM the two lines for the standing areas begin forming. (The VIP people are on a different plane of existence so I assume they got to go in earlier than us. Probably with foot massages and free champagne.)
I line up in the ‘다’ line outside the entrance. TeflPabo is in the ‘라’ line on the opposite side so we KakaoTalk at each other. With an actual seat reserved, flyinbluetardis can kick back in the café for another 45 minutes, triggering immediate second-guessing of my decision to remain standing for the next four hours.
The lines have signs dividing them into ticket numbers 1-200, 201-400 etc. Lining up basically consists of people moving along a likely-looking line while checking their ticket numbers against one another, then being told by the wandering staff that they’re in the wrong place anyway.
While waiting, I hear a couple of Japanese people trying to find their place in line so I briefly chat with them.
We periodically shuffle backwards again and again as people insert themselves ahead of us, until at one point the entire queue soft-wraps to a different length and we now shuffle into the next line to our side. The staff checks numbers and seems satisfied, but everybody else is like, “Did that work right? I didn’t move back in the queue, did I?”
We wait 40 minutes. Many selfies are taken.
At 5:07 PM we finally start moving.

The Crowd

I’d estimate the crowd is about 75% male / 25% female, though during the concert the female Elvi seem to have a disproportionately large presence. Or maybe it’s only the SCREAMING RIGHT BY MY EAR part that makes it seem that way…
I randomly encounter about 5-10 “foreign” faces at the concert, hear Chinese multiple times, and also Japanese quite a number of times. So who knows what the Korean/non-Korean ratio is?
I see one guy in the red-and-checkered t-shirt from July’s Japan concert, complete with custom matching red-and-checkered pants. That’s as cosplay as things get at this event. In contrast to the AOA events in Japan, my limited scan of the audience reveals no women dressed up in AOA outfits. Is that not a thing here?
There’s one guy ahead of me in line that I definitely recognize from December’s FNC Kingdom concert in Tokyo: another veteran of the post-concert event!
Of course various people are carrying around their banners and such for favorite members. It’s a real K-pop concert after all.

5:10 Entering Olympic Hall

By 5:10, both standing area lines start entering the hall.
Inside there’s a scary security guy periodically holding the line back for a moment until the people who’ve just entered can finish finding their places in the standing area. Avoiding a stampede. Good scary security guy.
Although I came lightly packed (light jacket, small shoulder pack to hold water and blinky light), I see no place where people more heavily burdened would be able to store anything (like the tube of posters and giant stuffed Moolbbang you might have just bought (see Moolbbang in the goods section, below)). We just file in lugging whatever random bags we’re carrying, and try to avoid stomping on each other’s stuff during the concert. We don’t always succeed.

5:15 Inside Olympic Hall

I’m inside by 5:15 PM.
It’s a fairly flat venue, with mildly raised seating surrounding a large standing area, and a H-shaped stage projecting into the crowd. The forward stage has a circular area that rotates and can be raised up into the air.
The seating is closer to the stage than I’d imagined…maybe getting a seat wouldn’t have been so bad.
The standing crowds are naturally skewing toward the front-center corners, closest to center stage, leaving the far corners (where we enter from) relatively unpopulated. I grab a position to the far right (of this left-side section) by the center railing, about 2/3 back: right about where my “reserved standing ticket” faked me into thinking I’d be standing. This allows an unobstructed view of one or another AOA member about 50% of the time. Hmm. At least I didn’t lose any ground!
I’m positioned behind two American-accented Female Elvi, and soon a couple Chinese Male Elvi position themselves behind me. I’m in a bubble of internationalness!
As time passes, the crowd continues to fill in.
There are video screens left, right, and center. During the performance most of the surrounding black areas are also revealed to be video screens; they’re just not showing anything yet.
There’s a narrow open buffer area around the stage large enough for camera people to navigate through. There’s also about 60 cm of foot-room between the ‘다’ & ‘라’ standing-section barriers, forming a narrow path that the crew uses to move between the stage and the mixing area.
At the back of the main floor there are a couple of rows of tables with MacBooks and assorted mixing equipment. There are big cameras L and R, and a medium-sized camera at center. Once the concert starts there are also handheld camera people (both video and still) wandering around the stage area, though the video cameras never come as far back as this. Still photographers do wander back here from time to time. The first time I see a casually-dressed photographer strolling about in there, I mistake him for a rogue fan about to be tackled by the MiB (see below).
The presence of the cameras makes it possible that there’ll be an eventual release of this concert in some form, but it’s by no means a done deal: they needed at least the big cameras for all the real-time video displays anyway. The mobile cameras I don’t recall ever showing up on the screens, so those are otherwise unexplained: we can hope.
Misc. AOA tracks are playing as we wait, including an instrumental of 느낌이 오니 (Feeling). Which I want.
Surprisingly, even with 2,500 people here, it’s not warm inside. At no point do I have the urge to remove my (relatively light, for Seoul in March) jacket. In contrast, FNC Kingdom in Japan last December was warm enough on the floor to make me ditch this same jacket immediately.
I scan the seating areas a number of times to try to find where flyinbluetardis might be sitting, but no luck. I can’t even see 10 people in front of me in my own section, so finding TeflPabo somewhere in the standing area to my right is hopeless. By our ticket numbers, he’s got to be a fair bit forward of me.
Most people seem to be waving the official “wing light” but there are a number of discount generic lights (on sale at a separate table outside) and a handful of the older disc-style AOA lights in evidence. I even see one of the red blinky lights from last summer’s Japanese concert. Maybe it’s that guy!
There are quite a few banners in view—a “Jimin ♥︎♥︎♥” banner right across from me, for instance. The owner is appropriately hysterical whenever Jimin appears.

Men in Black (again)

This concert has Men in Black too! Sharply dressed, not enjoying the show whatsoever, they wander around throughout the concert in the buffer zone between the sections, infiltrating the standing sections as needed. Sometimes standing on the steps of the divider walls to better scan the crowd. Sometimes clearly wanting to go down the aisle but not being able to squeeze past an official photographer.
Although theoretically security, their job winds up essentially being to target smartphone screens. I see several people’s arms get shoved down by the long arm of the law. And at one point I see one poor person at the front corner of ‘라’ having their phone’s media checked, even as AOA performs just beyond them. This is why fancams so often suddenly shift to suddenly looking at the back of someone’s head—they’ve spotted a patrolling MiB.
I later hear talk of at least one DSLR being inexplicably ignored throughout the concert. I’m guessing that’s because it didn’t match the primary visual scan criterion: i.e. a big honking screen that says “Look at me, I’m recording!!”
The second job of the MiB is to encourage people to not split their heads open by craning too far over the center divider wall while trying to actually see the stage. One agent kindly retrieves a banner that somebody dropped in the neutral zone.

Nearing the start. With bonus commercials!

5:30 PM: The screens suddenly switch from their winged-wheel concert logo to a quick “Olive Action” commercial followed by a 2 minute “Love FNC” commercial. AOA asks us to donate money to help build wells in Africa and the like. Then the logos come back up.
5:42 PM: A Seolhyun GMarket commercial plays. So that was her on the GMarket flyer I got with my last order! At the time I was just like, “Damn, do all Korean models these days look exactly like Seolhyun?”
5:49 - To my left are now a pair of short girls stuck behind a tall guy, who occasionally stands on his tip-toes because even he can’t see much in this crowd. Throughout the concert they continually try to jockey for position. Sometimes they take turns squeezing in front of me at the divider, soon realizing they can’t see anything there either (I could have told them that) unless they hang completely over the edge, which they try a couple times. Risking an MIB deployment.
Eventually they seem to give up, and for a good part of the concert a gaggle of about 5-6 short girls assembles in the back of ‘다’ and essentially ignores the performance to form a circle and chat amongst themselves. Occasionally waving their wing-lights. At a ticket price of ₩100,000 I prefer to stand facing the stage and pretend that I can see.
5:50 PM - The Olive/Love FNC commercials run again.
5:57 The house lights go down, and spots directed at the audience come up. We’re set to go.

The Concert Experience

The concert starts soon after 6 PM.
2/3 back in the standing area, my visual experience is quite often blocked by the heads of everybody in front of me. Par for the course, but if you’re getting a standing ticket, keep your number low!
The feeling is basically: “Wait, where’d she go? Nope, now somebody’s head’s in the way. That’s a backup dancer, not her, right? Hey look she’s over there now—if I keep perfectly still I can see her with my left eye!”
This is why they have video screens.
I literally don’t even recognize that the rotating/raising circular stage area has a big image of the concert’s wheel logo on it until I later see photos online. Simply can’t see it.
flyinbluetardis , I hope you’re enjoying your luxuriously unobstructed view from up there!

The members

This time Choa is going for red-brown hair, Mina has gone back to long and black. Yuna has her new dark-blonde bob, and Chanmi is a new version of candy-colored. Hyejeong is keeping hers black, and Jimin’s is even longer than before.
Yuna seems to be in good health, her ankle apparently healed up enough to perform without a problem. This was my biggest worry.

The Concert!—Overview

This concert follows (what I assume is) the standard pattern of performance segments divided by periodic video clips: the Japan concerts were cut from this template too.
Divided into arbitrary sections based on when there’s a video or a talk segment, here’s the flow:
(Solo zone #1)
(Solo zone #2)
(Back to group songs)
(Encore call)

The Concert!—Song by Song

Video: Introduction

The concert opens with photos of the AOA members as little kids, then replaced with their grown-up versions. Narration: “Once upon a time there were seven very different little girls, who grew up to becoOh my GOD what happened here? All hail hormones!!”
(Note: it’s possible I have inadvertently rephrased that last part.)
AOA then shows up in sparkling gold costumes.

Excuse Me

The rhythm of the introduction segues directly into Excuse Me, a nice effect. Start with their current single, right off the bat!

Like a Cat

Miniskirt

Now in black miniskirts, with the requisite zipper.

Talk 1: Greetings

At this point each member introduces herself.
Hey, did you know that AOA speaks Korean?
Yeah. The thing is that, in my experience it’s generally been Japanese up until now. So even though I've obviously anticipated this moment, it’s still a pretty exotic experience to suddenly find myself sort of vaguely smiling at AOA as they engage in banter that entirely eludes the cognitive centers of my brain.
So, self-introductions. Other than that, I wonder what they’re saying. The crowd thinks it’s pretty interesting… My Korean is good enough to hear them mention the nice weather. Probably not the interesting part.

Chocolate

So, forget talking, let’s just sing.

Oh Boy

An AOA classic in Japan, and new in Korea! The crowd is happy.

Bing Bing

Their other current single!

Solo zone #1: Hyejeong, Mina, Chanmi

This section starts with three video calls from “Boss” to various members, who’ve received some sort of “mission” envelope. Then the members have their solo stages.

Video calls 1

Chanmi’s Dance Solos

She covers:
It seems that the dancing that Chanmi is into is perhaps a touch more hardcore than what she normally gets to do with AOA…

Hyejeong’s Solos

Covers of:
She starts off soft, and winds up climbing up on a table to an appreciative crowd (incidentally making her much easier to see from the standing area).

Mina’s Solo

Cover of:
Mina has the sexy afterburners on for this performance! Many sweaty brows are wiped.

Video: Ordering food

There’s more to it than that, but that’s the gist: they call for an order of takeout food. Participating is a bonus doggie! (Is that Seolhyun’s Dungchee? Maybe he liked Mina’s sexy solo too!)

Lily

AOA now wearing white.

Cherry Pop

With a Pac Man theme because, you know, cherries.

Short Hair

Talk 2: Solo debriefs

Chanmi, Hyejeong, and Mina each talk about their solo performances.

Under the Street Light

Time

Solo zone #2: Choa, Jimin, Seolhyun

Video calls 2

Seolhyun Dance Solos

Covers:
Dancing to the former, writhing all over a sofa to the latter. Why could it be there so many fancams for this…
At first she comes out concealed under an enormous hat. In a misplaced burst of recognition a girl across from me immediately calls out, “Park Choa!! …Oh wait, nope!” Good try.

Choa Solo

It’s Don’t Be Shy! Praise be, Choa actually has a song of her own to perform, rather than a cover! She’s in scarlet from veil to heels.
When she comes out concealed under her veil, you can see people frantically traversing their mental member checklists to narrow down who it’s likely to be. But she soon removes her veil. And later her dress.
For the first few moments it isn’t even clear what song is playing; when we identify it about 15 seconds in, there are suddenly a lot of happy people.
My impression of Don’t Be Shy has always been the kind of song where you sit around coolly beheading Barbies, but this time there’s suddenly a dance break in the middle, making it more about ditching your dress and dropping to your knees to get funky on stage.
In no way is this is a bad thing of course, but still, hokey smokes!

Yuna Solo

She covers:
Yuna ditches nothing, and is not funky. She stands majestically in her white gown.
Sometimes she is higher in the air than other times—they may be using the stage mechanism for this, or it may be an inherent Yuna feature; I’m too busy being mesmerized to think about it.
Also, nice use of the multiple video screens for her performance here: Yuna from several angles simultaneously.

Jimin Solo

So, Jimin suddenly debuts her new song at us. One guess as to its title. We’ve been analyzing that clip she recently put on Instagram as best we could, but the audio here is a bit better than a phone…
It’s fun watching everyone try to sing along with a song that we’ve never heard before, yet we somehow already know the single word that is 25% of the lyrics.
The crowd also reacts enthusiastically to the well placed “God Jimin Diva!!”

Get Out

Nothing says we love you more than assembling a mob, gathering around your favorite group, and screaming “Get out! Get out!! Get out!! Get out!!!”
For this song AOA enters through the aisles of the hall (shadowed by the MiB). Back on stage they’re armed with pump-action ping-pong guns, which they mercilessly fire into the crowd. Eventually they give up on the guns and just start flinging balls around. Around here is where TeflPabo gets a Chanmi ball. (Reinforcing my opinion of Chanmi as AOA’s resident ballistics expert, as mentioned in July’s concert after-report.)
Only after the ammo runs out is there any attempt at choreography.

Good Luck

Confused

No sofa this time. Seolhyun already burned it out.

Video: Dance Practice

Chanmi sneaks a camera into AOA’s practice room. There, the members are trying to do some new dance, and gradually lose their minds. Chanmi ends with “Uh-oh…”

Boys in Luv

They then, in hoodies, perform this dance. Turns out it’s a cover of Boys in Love (BTS).

Bang Bang Bang

Next: a fun cover of Bang Bang Bang (Big Bang).
Allow me an aside here. Inexplicably, this precise performance has been something I've had on my mind for a number of months. From time to time I’d idly imagine, for no particular reason, how it’d be kind of amusing if AOA did this particular song. Complete with Jimin’s “Hey,” right where it has to be. And so today they perform it.
I have precisely zero other “OMG I totally wish x group would do y song!!!” thoughts, so why was I even thinking about this? And what mechanism did they use to read my mind so precisely?
Incidentally, this song calls for about the least “Yuna-like” choreography that I can imagine.

Help Me

The crowd’s enthusiastic about this one!

Talk: “Farewell” Feint

“This is the final song!” Awww…except you haven’t done Heart Attack yet, so we don’t believe you.
Every concert’s gotta have the feint!

Elvis

My thought was that they released the new “for our fans” song For ELVIS in order to finally be able to retire this song. But here it is anyway.
Well fine, I still think that’s their plan, but they couldn’t not play it during their first full domestic concert. So now they’ll retire it. This time for sure.

Encore call

About 5 minutes of yelling into the darkness.

AOA

Now they’re back in the official concert t-shirts, each member with her own customizations: sleeveless, slashed…

With Elvis

And here’s the replacement song. Mark my words, now that they have this more “modern AOA-like” song to end with, the regular Elvis is going to be depreciated!
As they perform this, infinite amounts of confetti are pumped into the air. 10 minutes after walking away from the concert, it was still falling out of my hair.

Talk: Farewells

Each member shares their thoughts with the crowd.
Seolhyun has a bit of trouble with this (Chants of “Don’t cry!”). Jimin is resolutely facing away from the crowd at this point, and is handed a tissue by Seolhyun.
In turn Yuna, Hyejeong, Choa, Mina, Chanmi, and Seolhyun again. Then Jimin’s composed enough to talk.

Luv Me

By this time the members are starting to get loose in their choreography, wandering up to the crowd to abscond with people’s banners and stuffed animals and such.

Heart Attack

Oh dear this was our ace in the hole—now we’re worried that the concert might really be over.

Heart Attack (reprise) & Final farewell

And so it is. They take a pair of photographs, thank us for coming, and the concert is over. It’s about 8:25 PM.

8:30 PM After the Concert

After the concert ends, people start taking photos openly. As opposed to covertly, which they’ve already been doing for the past two hours. I take various photos, and try to get a feel for how the seating works (in case there’s ever another concert I want to see here).
Outside the hall, people are now taking photos by the AOA China Union rice setup, as it’s the closest official-looking banner available. The goods tents are also apparently still operational, with people lined up.
I wander out into the darkness to meet up with TeflPabo, wherever he is.
And with that, the first official (Korean) solo AOA concert (in Korea) ends! TeflPabo and I go off to rehydrate ourselves and grab some excellent samgyeopsal. And mostly sit down.

Misc note

Conspicuously missing from the concert was AOA Cream’s song “I’m Jelly Baby,” only a year old. Maybe Chanmi couldn’t be convinced to turn on the cute one more time. She’s more like, “Cream? No way! Bend Ova!!”

Standing or sitting?

This was my first experience standing in a concert like this; I’d had a seat in both of the other AOA concerts in Japan. Would I recommend standing, or sitting?
This is a little tough. In this hall, if I could get a really low number—like under 100, say, 82?—then I’d choose standing again. Preferably in the VIP area. With champagne. And leg massages by Dungchee.
Any farther back than that, and I’d instead choose sitting. No question. TeflPabo was closer to the stage, so opinions might differ here.
The actual standing for hours on end part is not really a factor, it’s the “reliably seeing the group I’m here to see” part. The fancams shot from up on high are my first time actually seeing large sections of the concert I’d attended in person.
Maybe the stage was just low. Even a little bit higher is better: it was easy to see Seolhyun on her sofa on the upper stage of course, but even Hyejeong just standing up on her little table helped a lot.

Plusses of sitting:
There’s something to be said for having a clear view of what the hell’s going on.

Official Goods!

Other than the wing light which I obviously needed in-hand, it’s only after the concert ends and I’m back at the hotel that I have a chance to finally go through my bag of other official concert goods.

Wing Light

A nice, 3D double-wing design. Substantial. Blueish white light, with three lighting patterns: steady, slow blink, and fast blink. With wrist strap. Takes two AAA batteries, so you can replace them and wave it around for oh, decades to come!

Poster set

I didn’t get the set of 7 member posters, for the simple reason that they wouldn’t have fit in my minimal luggage for the trip back to Japan the next day. They apparently came in a sturdy tube, so the packaging seems pretty good.

Screen cleaner for phone

This is a set of seven 5-cm cloth discs, with individual Bing Bing/Excuse Me style logos on the microfiber side, and a member photo on the sticky side. The idea is to stick one of them to the back of your phone, then repeatedly peel it off to use as a screen cleaner. It’s apparently washable, and they say the sticky side won’t wear out easily.

Memo pad + Mini standing doll

I don’t know where they get “memo pad” from, but this is a clear plastic sheet with an Ace of Angels logo, and 7 cut-out member stand-ups (though Choa’s lying down) each about 8 cm tall. It comes with patches of double-sided tape to attach the members to the backing board.
Maybe if you add some post-its, then it’s a “memo pad?”

Concert t-shirt

Confidential! So confidential that nobody will realize it’s an AOA shirt until their nose is literally poking at your chest. For the record, it says:
CONFIDENTIAL AA0809 | JM0108 CA0306 | YN1230 ACE OF ANGELS (really tiny) HJ0810 | MA0921 SH0103 | CM0619 CONFIDENTIAL
It’s nifty when you figure out the (not so difficult) code, but it’s the sort of nifty that you can’t really share with anyone who doesn’t already recognize this specific t-shirt. So just smile quietly to yourself as you go about your day.
The printing is on the front only. The only available color is red on white, and the only size is XXL. Any other variation is a knockoff (already available online), and none of your money from those gets back to AOA.
I don’t really need any of this stuff; I just want to support them when given the chance, so I avoid buying anything non-official. But that’s just me.

Moolbbang stuff

Moolbbang is…a fish? That’s an FNC? thing connected to the “Love FNC” charity commercial from earlier. The idea is they give a percentage of their profits toward musical instruments for children and teens. Not directly AOA related. Being a fish and all.

Stuffed Moolbbang doll

Reportedly pretty huge. Nope. Not in my suitcase, fish.

Moolbbang name tag

This is a big (9x10 cm) soft-plastic Moolbbang fish with a card embedded in the back to write you name on. Pretty thick too, like 5-6 mm so it has some heft. Maybe you dangle it from your bag, though it’s a little heavy for that. Oddly, this sold out pretty quickly.

Moolbbang pen

It’s a black gel pen, also with that Moolbbang fish. They apparently also had one with a dog, and a…hm. Another thing. I don’t actually know what the third one is, even looking at the picture… Person? Cat with a melon on its head? Anyway, still nothing to do with AOA.

Bonus: 2017 Season’s Greetings Set

They also had some of the calendar boxed sets left over, so what better place to sell them? Even if it’s a bit late, the calendars are so subtle that they just look like AOA posters anyway: ignore those little numbers! I already have my set so I didn’t get this.

Bonus

On the flight home, among the Korean video content I unexpectedly ran across that recent episode of Knowing Bros with AOA! That was an unexpected bit of fun.

Conclusion

So, that was the first Korean concert I've ever attended! Had a great time. And actually (finally) experiencing being in a fully Korean-speaking environment gives a big boost to my motivation to study the language even more. Gotta find out what they’re saying!
I never quite absorbed how close Korea is to Japan before now, or how easy it is to fly there. And having a concert like this was an excellent excuse to make this first trip! Hopefully now that they’ve done this one, AOA will hold some more full concerts in Korea.
Until then, I’ll wait to see what they have up their sleeves for Japan this year. Haven’t heard any news, but they’re almost certainly already planning something…
